The Government of Mongolia has approved a historic decision / July 28, 2021 / to make permanent operation of the “Zamyn-Uud” free zone, which has been stopped for more than 20 years. In connection with this decision, a working group consisting of relevant ministers was instructed to visit the site and take urgent measures to intensify the development work to provide the free zone with infrastructure.
Accordance with decision, governor’s administration of the “Zamiin-Uud” Free Zone is preparing event which to start the zone into regular operation on August 14, 2021 in the territory of Zamiin-Uud soum of Dornogovi aimag.
Within the framework of the preparation work, we are working to launch the services of all relevant professional agencies such as Border protection agency, Customs, Specialized Inspection, and Mongolian Immigration Authority, and to open the Zamiin-Uud free zone for permanent operations for movement of passengers and freight transportation vehicles.
Starting movement of passenger and freight transportation vehicles in the Zamyn-Uud Free Zone will reduce the congestion at the Zamyn-Uud soum border port, increase traffic flow, and improve access.
Currently, power supply, water supply, sewerage, roads, communication, signaling, and heating stations have been built in Sections 3 and 4 of the Zamiin-Uud Free Zone. If these stations operate at full capacity, they will be able to supply the free zone and the entire Zamyn-Uud soum.
The Governor’s administration of the Zamyn-Uud Free Zone and the Asian Development Bank are jointly implementing the Economic Cooperation Zone Development Project, which aims to increase the capacity of the above-mentioned infrastructure facilities in 2021 and to create a favorable environment for investors and businesses, to support sustainable management activities, and to establish a port access system in the free zone in stages.
In case of started the permanent operation of the Zamyn-Uud Free Zone, it will be possible to produce about 2,500 types of products, and the products labeled “Made in Mongolia” will have full access to third country markets. In addition, GDP will be 1.6-2.3 percent and will increase by 10 percent in 2022-2036. As a result, 9,400 direct jobs will be created by 2025, 15,000 by 2030, and tripled by 2034, with domestic and foreign direct investment reaching $ 2.9 billion, creating 18,000 new jobs, and intensifying regional development. It is unique in that it provides jobs for thousands of people of local and is a leader in the Mongolian economy.
